Big matches in Nairobi fill the roads around the stadium hours before kickoff, and the queue at the gate can take longer than the journey. Pick your stadium, where you are setting off from and the kickoff time.

When to leave for Raila Odinga Stadium, Kasarani or Nyayo, how long it takes, what it costs, and the kickoff in Swahili time.

How the times are worked out

  • Distance is the straight line between your area and the stadium, stretched by 40% for Nairobi’s roads.
  • Traffic is taken at about 22 km/h on an ordinary match day and 15 km/h for a sell-out, door to drop-off point. Matatus add time for waiting and changing.
  • The drop-off to the gate takes 20 to 35 minutes on foot through the crowds, because cars are kept away from the stadium.
  • Security and queueing are allowed 30 minutes, or an hour for Kenya matches, the opening match and knockout games. At CHAN 2024, gates at Kasarani were overwhelmed for Kenya’s matches.

It is a planning estimate, not a live route. On the day, follow the organisers’ road closures and instructions, and leave earlier rather than later.

Swahili time

Kenyans often tell the time in Kiswahili, counting the hours from sunrise. Saa moja - the first hour - is 7am or 7pm, so a match at saa tatu usiku kicks off at 9pm. The planner shows your kickoff both ways.
