Nairobi hosts AFCON 2027 matches at three stadiums: a brand-new 60,000-seat arena off Ngong Road, the rebuilt national stadium at Kasarani, and the central Nyayo National Stadium. All three are on the map, and the matchday planner works out when to leave for each.
| Stadium | Seats | Where | Best reached from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raila Odinga International Stadium | 60,000 | Jamhuri, off Ngong Road | Kilimani, Lavington, Karen, Lang’ata |
| Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani | 60,000 | Off Thika Road | Thika Road, Roysambu, Gigiri, Ruaka |
| Nyayo National Stadium | 30,000 | By the CBD, on Mombasa Road | CBD, South B and C, Madaraka, Upper Hill |
Raila Odinga International Stadium
The new national showpiece. Known during construction as Talanta Stadium, at Talanta Sports City, it was renamed after the late statesman Raila Odinga. Building began in March 2024, carried out by China Road and Bridge Corporation under the Kenya Defence Forces’ engineers, at a reported cost of about KES 45.85 billion. It was reported to be more than 90% complete in August 2026.
- Capacity: 60,000 - Kenya’s largest stadium.
- Design: a roof shaped like the shield on Kenya’s flag, 52 executive suites, solar panels and rainwater harvesting.
- Where: at Jamhuri, off Ngong Road, near Jamhuri Park showground and Ngong Racecourse, about 10 km west of the CBD. See it on the map.
- Big matches: it is one of the stadiums in contention for the opening match or the final. CAF has not decided yet.
Getting there
- Ngong Road is the main route, and it is slow at peak times - on matchdays, much slower.
- From Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Lavington it is a short ride. From Karen and Lang’ata, use the Southern Bypass or Ngong Road.
- Matatus run along Ngong Road from the CBD towards Karen and Ngong.
- Expect organised drop-off zones and road closures on matchdays.
Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani
Kenya’s home of big football since 1987. Better known as Kasarani, the stadium closed in February 2026 for major works: a hybrid grass pitch and new drainage, fully replaced seating and a new canopy, 2,000-lux floodlights, VAR facilities, big screens, new changing rooms and automated ticketing. The works take it from about 48,000 seats to 60,000.
- Where: off the Thika Superhighway, about 12 km north-east of the CBD, near Garden City and Thika Road Mall. See it on the map.
- History: it hosted Kenya’s matches at CHAN 2024, including the famous 1-0 win over Morocco and the quarter-final against Madagascar.
Getting there
- Thika Road is fast off-peak but crawls at rush hour, and the exits jam after big matches.
- Matatus and buses run constantly along Thika Road from the CBD; many drop near the stadium.
- Allow time for the walk from drop-off points to the gates.
- CHAN 2024 lesson: crowds without tickets forced their way in for Kenya’s matches, and CAF cut capacity as a penalty. Arrive early, have your ticket ready, and keep away from crushes.
Nyayo National Stadium
The central venue. Nyayo sits where Lang’ata Road, Mombasa Road and Aerodrome Road meet, just south of the CBD. It has been renovated with a new canopy, lighting and track, and hosted CHAN 2024 matches and Kenya’s AFCON 2027 qualifier against Eritrea in September 2026.
- Capacity: listed at about 30,000 for AFCON 2027.
- Where: see it on the map.
Getting there
- The easiest to reach - many fans can walk from parts of the CBD, South B and Madaraka, or take a short ride.
- The Expressway and Mombasa Road pass right by; the junction is one of Nairobi’s busiest.
- Matatus from the CBD towards Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road pass the stadium.
On the day
Before you leave
- Your ticket - on your phone and, if you can, a screenshot in case the network is jammed. A Fan ID too if CAF requires one.
- ID or passport.
- A charged phone and a small power bank.
- M-Pesa and some cash for food and transport.
- A warm layer - June and July are Nairobi’s coolest months, and evenings can drop to around 12°C. See Weather in Nairobi.
At the gate
- Arrive early - two to three hours for a sell-out. Queues and security checks take time.
- Expect searches. Leave behind anything you would not take through airport security; stadiums usually ban glass, bottles, weapons, fireworks, flares and large bags. Check the official list before you go.
- Follow stewards and police, and don’t push at gates.
Inside
- Find your seat and exits as soon as you arrive.
- Agree a meeting point with your group in case phones don’t work.
- Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket.
Leaving
- Wait a little - the first half-hour after the whistle is the most crowded.
- Walk to a pickup point away from the stadium before calling a ride.
- Share your trip with someone, and check the car and driver match the app.
Training grounds
Teams will train at nearby grounds - Kasarani’s own annex pitches, and other Nairobi venues. Open training sessions, if any, will be announced by the teams.
