Lenders decide how much you can borrow mostly from how much of your monthly pay they will let go on repayments. Start with that, and work back to a price.

Roughly how large a mortgage and home your take-home pay supports in Kenya.
Before you go to a bank
- Compare offers on the total cost, not only the rate: arrangement fees, valuation, legal fees and insurance add up.
- Ask whether the rate is fixed or variable. Most Kenyan mortgages are variable, so repayments can rise.
- Budget for stamp duty - 4% in Nairobi - and legal fees on top of the deposit. See the stamp duty calculator.
