Most people in Nairobi move every year or two. A local move is simple if you book early, agree the price in writing, and deal with both landlords before moving day.
Your options
- A moving company - packing, loading, transport, unpacking and often insurance. Best for families and fragile or valuable items.
- A truck and loaders - you pack; they load, drive and unload. Much cheaper, and common for smaller moves.
- A pickup or small lorry - for a bedsitter or a few items. Available through transport apps and from truck stages.
What affects the cost
- How much you have - the number of rooms and bulky items.
- Distance and traffic - moving across town at rush hour takes longer.
- Floors and lifts - stairs with no lift take more people and time.
- Packing - full packing costs more than transport only.
- The day - month ends and weekends are busiest.
Get quotes from two or three movers after they have seen your home, in person or by video, and confirm the final price, what is included, and the payment terms in writing.
Before moving day
- Give notice to your landlord as your lease requires, in writing.
- Book the mover early, especially for the last days of the month.
- Tell the caretakers at both buildings, and book the lift if needed. Some buildings only allow moves at set times.
- Arrange utilities - buy tokens for the new meter, and arrange internet. See Home internet.
- Pack valuables and documents yourself, and carry them with you.
Leaving the old home
- Clean and fix small damage.
- Do the exit inspection with the landlord or caretaker, and take dated photos.
- Pay the final bills and hand back keys and access cards.
- Ask for the deposit in writing, less any itemised deductions. See Tenant rights.
On moving day
- Be there at both ends.
- Check items off as they are loaded and unloaded.
- Report damage straight away, with photos.
- Pay once the job is done, by M-Pesa or bank, and get a receipt.
