Lavington and Kileleshwa sit side by side west of the city centre, between Kilimani and Westlands. Both are leafy and residential, popular with families and professionals who want space without a long commute. They are on the map.

The difference

  • Kileleshwa - mostly apartment blocks, many with pools, gyms and boreholes. Greener and a little quieter than Kilimani.
  • Lavington - more houses, townhouses and low-rise compounds, with large gardens, plus newer apartment blocks. Quieter and more suburban.

Who they suit

  • Families - space, gardens, and many schools nearby, including Braeburn’s Gitanga Road campus and several Kenyan-curriculum private schools.
  • Professionals working in Westlands, Kilimani, Upper Hill or the CBD.
  • Less so people without a car in Lavington, where walking and matatus are limited.

Getting around

  • To Westlands - 10 to 30 minutes via James Gichuru Road or Waiyaki Way.
  • To Upper Hill and the CBD - 15 to 45 minutes.
  • School runs jam Gitanga, Othaya and James Gichuru roads at peak times.
  • Kileleshwa has more matatu routes and is easier without a car.

Safety

Both are generally considered safe residential areas. Most homes are in gated compounds with askaris, and many use alarm and response companies. The usual care with phones and walking at night applies. See Safety in Nairobi.

Daily life

  • Shopping: Lavington Mall and Valley Arcade, with supermarkets and cafés; the Kilimani and Westlands malls are close.
  • Health: close to Nairobi Hospital and the Westlands hospitals.
  • Outdoors: leafy streets for walking, and Karura and Ngong Road forests a short drive away.

Water

Rationing affects parts of both areas. Ask about boreholes and storage tanks before signing. See Utilities in Nairobi.
