Karen and Lang’ata lie on Nairobi’s south-western edge, beside Nairobi National Park and the Ngong Forest. Karen feels semi-rural, with large plots and horses; Lang’ata is more mixed, with estates and apartments. They are on the map.

The difference

  • Karen - large houses on half-acre to multi-acre plots, gated communities and townhouses, boutique shops and garden restaurants. Popular with families and people who want space.
  • Lang’ata - middle-class estates, townhouses and apartment blocks, closer to the city and Wilson Airport, and more affordable.

Who they suit

  • Families - space, gardens and many schools, including Hillcrest, Brookhouse and Banda. See International schools.
  • People who work from home, or in Karen or Lang’ata.
  • Nature lovers - the national park, the Giraffe Centre, riding and forest walks.
  • Less so people commuting daily to Westlands or Gigiri.

Getting around

  • A car is essential in Karen. Distances are long and matatus limited.
  • To the CBD and Upper Hill - 30 minutes to over an hour on Lang’ata or Ngong Road.
  • To Westlands - often 45 minutes or more; the Southern Bypass and the Expressway help.
  • To JKIA - via the Southern Bypass, often quicker than from the north.

Safety

Houses on large plots need good security: guards, alarms linked to a response company, and electric fencing are normal. Residents’ associations are active and share security news. See Safety in Nairobi.

Daily life

  • Shopping: The Hub Karen, Waterfront Karen, Karen Crossroads and Galleria on Lang’ata Road.
  • Health: Karen Hospital, and clinics in the malls.
  • Outdoors: Nairobi National Park, Ngong Forest, riding, and the Karen Blixen Museum.

Water and power

Many Karen homes rely on boreholes and large tanks, and outages can last longer on the edges of the grid. Ask about backup power and water. See Utilities in Nairobi.
