Where you stay in Nairobi matters because of the traffic. A well-chosen area can save hours each day. Choose by what you plan to do, then by budget.

Westlands
The most popular choice. Hotels of every level, malls, restaurants, bars and coworking spaces, and quick access to the Expressway for the airport. Good for a first visit and business trips. Can be noisy at night. See Living in Westlands.
Karen
On the south-western edge of the city, close to Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Karen Blixen Museum. Boutique hotels, lodges and guesthouses in large gardens. Ideal for a wildlife focus and families; you will need taxis to get anywhere.
Kilimani and Lavington
Central and residential, with many serviced apartments, cafés and restaurants. A good base for longer stays. See Serviced apartments in Nairobi.
Gigiri and Runda
The diplomatic area, home to the UN offices and many embassies, with Village Market and Two Rivers malls nearby. Quiet and upmarket; a long way from the south of the city.
The CBD
Convenient for government offices, some businesses and budget hotels, and close to the National Museum and KICC. Lively by day; avoid walking around after dark. See Is Nairobi safe for tourists?.
Near JKIA
Hotels near the airport, including some with direct access, suit early departures and layovers. There is little to do nearby. See the JKIA airport guide.
Tips
- Book somewhere with airport transfers if you land late.
- Check what “near” means - distances are short on a map but long in traffic.
- For a safari, many operators pick up from hotels in all these areas.
- For stays of a month or more, a serviced apartment is usually better value.
