Kenya’s athletes are famous for a reason, and Nairobi has an active sporting life of its own: forest trails, running clubs, rugby weekends and golf courses in the middle of the city.

The altitude

Nairobi sits at around 1,700 metres. If you arrive from lower ground, you will feel it for the first week or two: take it easy, drink more water, and expect your times to be slower at first.

Running and walking

Running clubs meet in several of these places at weekends, and are an easy way to meet people.

Cycling

Road cycling on the busy roads is for confident riders; most people prefer the forest trails in Karura and Ngong Road Forest, or group rides that start early in the morning. Hell’s Gate National Park near Naivasha lets you cycle among wildlife.

Gyms and pools

Gyms range from neighbourhood gyms to large chains in malls and hotels. Many newer apartment blocks have their own. Pools are mostly at hotels, clubs and gyms; ask about day passes.

Team sports and clubs

  • Rugby has a big following, with club matches on weekends.
  • Football - the Kenyan Premier League, and pick-up games in every estate.
  • Golf - Nairobi has several long-established courses, including Muthaiga, Karen and Royal Nairobi. Most are members’ clubs with visitor green fees.
  • Athletics - see the events page for the Kip Keino Classic and road races.

Clubs are a big part of Nairobi social life, and many offer family memberships.

Staying safe outdoors

  • Run and walk in daylight and in groups, especially on quiet roads.
  • Keep your phone out of sight on the street.
  • Use the forests’ own paths and gates, and follow their opening hours.
