Nairobi is a good city for dogs and cats, with plenty of vets, green space in the suburbs, and active rescue groups. Bringing a pet into the country takes planning, so start early.

Bringing a pet into Kenya

You need an import permit from the Directorate of Veterinary Services, arranged before you travel. Applications are made through the Directorate or a Kenyan embassy, and permits are valid for a limited time for one journey. Expect to need:

  • A rabies vaccination, given well before travel and still valid. Follow the timing in the permit conditions exactly.
  • A microchip, recommended and often expected.
  • A veterinary health certificate from your home country, issued shortly before the flight and endorsed by its government vet service.
  • Any parasite treatment the permit asks for.

Check your airline’s rules too: many carry pets only as cargo, and rules on breeds and crates vary. A pet relocation agent can handle the paperwork.

Vets

Nairobi has many private veterinary clinics, especially in Westlands, Kilimani, Karen and Lang’ata, and several run emergency services. Register with one when you arrive and save its number.

Keeping pets healthy

  • Rabies vaccination every year for dogs and cats. Rabies is present in Kenya, so keep it up to date.
  • Ticks are common, especially in the rains. Use tick prevention and check dogs after walks.
  • The heat and the altitude are mild, but give shade and water.

Adopting

The Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) in Karen, and several smaller rescue groups, rehome dogs and cats. Adoption usually includes vaccination and a home check.

Practicalities

  • Rentals. Ask before you sign; many landlords and apartment blocks limit pets. Get permission in writing.
  • Walking dogs. Some forests and parks allow dogs on leads - check each one’s rules before you go. National parks do not allow pets.
  • Security dogs. Many homes keep dogs as guards. Make sure staff and visitors know how to be safe around them.
