Kenya replaced visas with an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) in 2024. Most visitors apply online before travelling. The standard fee is US$ 30.

Do you need one?

  • Most visitors do, including from Europe, North America and Asia.
  • Most African nationals do not since mid-2025, and citizens of the East African Community travel freely. A few African nationalities are still required to apply.
  • Transit passengers who stay airside generally do not, but check with your airline.

What you need

  • A passport valid for at least six months from arrival, with a blank page.
  • A recent photo of your face, taken against a plain background.
  • A scan or photo of your passport’s data page.
  • Your travel details: flight, arrival date, and where you are staying.
  • A card to pay the fee.

Step by step

  1. Go to etakenya.go.ke and start a new application.
  2. Fill in your personal and passport details exactly as in your passport.
  3. Upload the photo and passport page.
  4. Enter your travel plans and accommodation.
  5. Pay the fee.
  6. Wait for the email. Save the approved eTA and print a copy.

How long it takes

Most applications are approved within three working days, and many in one. Apply at least a week before you fly. An eTA allows a stay of up to 90 days, counted from arrival.

Avoid copycat sites

Many websites look official and charge several times the real fee. Use only etakenya.go.ke. If you paid far more than US$ 30, you have probably used an agent.

At the airport

Show your passport and approved eTA at immigration. You may be asked for a return ticket, your accommodation and a yellow fever certificate if you come from a country with yellow fever risk.
